It had to happen eventually. The biggest name in social media has changed its name. Well at least the typeface used on its name.
Can you tell the difference? The new one is the top one.
It has removed the slight character it had and neutralised it. It’s gone a little narrower. All in a bid to appear more friendly to its current and new users. The biggest difference is in the ‘a’ which has gone more rounded as in the Avant Garde font and less like the globally used Helvetica. It certainly looks less quirky though many would argue that is what gives it appeal.
They have pretty much removed any character it had and made it more non-descript. They looked at it for a while apparently, with their creative director Josh Higgins saying the aim was to appear more “friendly and approachable”. “When Facebook’s logo was first created in 2005, the company was just getting started and we wanted the logo to feel grown up and to be taken seriously.”
They worked with Eric Olson, who created the original font, Klavika, who wanted to introduce a typeface that more represented where the company is now. And so we have what we see above top.
What do you think?
Is it better?
