Digital marketing has taken on a whole new life in our modern digital age. There are new activity options appearing almost daily. It can be a minefield. There are new buzzwords, like programmatic, to understand and people are still getting used to many of the existing ones. To help you get a grasp of the terminology used in digital marketing we have compiled a brief list. This is not an exhaustive list but it covers the basics.
Affiliate marketing – This is where an advertiser and a merchant agree a deal for sharing compensation based on performance. Like pay per click.
Blogging – This is a facility where you can write as much as you like about any relevant subject you want on a website – like I am doing here.
Domains – This is what your website will be called and will appear in the URL bar at the top of your search engine. It starts with www.yourwebsitename.co.uk You need this to be registered otherwise it will not work.
Emarketing – Pretty much any promotional activity you do via email.
Ecommerce – If you want to sell products from your website you will need an ecommerce site. This will allow people to buy your products and pay for them via your website.
Online advertising – Any form of advertising on a website: banner ad or pay per clock promotion.
Search engine optimisation – This is what is done to get your website to be visible as high as possible on Google search results. The objective isa to use quality copy for your site and then quality links to strengthen it’s relevance for people searching for your products.
Social media marketing – This covers any social media activity you do whether on Facebook or Twitter or anything else. It is an artform and should be done strategically so as not to cause damage to your marketing objectives. It sounds easy but it is not.
Web analytics – This is ideal for analysing how your website is performing. You need to know what people are looking at on your site and what is getting them to contact you. This will help us fine tune your content and information.
Web design – This covers a wide range of website styles. Basically this is how your website looks when people view it. It contains everything from navigation, home page, shopping cart, to enquiry form and location map.
Web hosting – Clearly you will need somewhere for your website to live. It appears to be up there in the ether but it is actually sitting on a massive server somewhere. This is called the hosting server.
Digital marketing is now a much bigger part of the overall marketing mix and should be used as and when deemed suitable for target markets. There is a wider choice now and the key to being successful is getting the most out of the marketing budget and gaining awareness for products and businesses.
